But the best way to approach this record is as a standalone entity, informed by the history of Bon Iver and The National but unshackled by a predetermined template. It can be difficult as a listener to avoid instantly measuring a record like Big Red Machine up against its predecessors - does it aim for the wounded pastoral beauty of Bon Iver, or does it try to replicate the fussy electronics of 22, A Million? It’s tempting to put the album in a box before allowing it to reveal itself. Now Vernon and Dessner have reunited for a full-length album, bottling the promise of that standalone song in service of something substantially bigger.

The roots of the duo’s partnership stretch back nearly a decade the two joined forces in 2009 to contribute a song to Dark Is the Night, a sprawling charity compilation backed by an eye-popping who’s who of indie rock. Just days ago, he showed up on an Eminem album of all places, only to immediately rebuke it.īig Red Machine, a pairing of Vernon and The National’s Aaron Dessner, is the latest product of those collaborative instincts. He was a major player in Kanye West’s post-Swiftgate creative renaissance (appearing on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Watch the Throne and Yeezus). He has branched out within the indie world, working with Francis and the Lights and James Blake. He dabbled in the jagged barroom blues of The Shouting Matches. Volcano Choir’s wildly divergent albums can attest to that, as can the slinky bedroom smolder of the sole Gayngs record. But Vernon seems remarkably comfortable setting his ego aside and ceding the spotlight when it suits the music. At first glance this might read like a way to disentangle himself from the daunting expectations that weigh on each new Bon Iver record. The reality, though, is that the solitude that birthed For Emma is something of an outlier Vernon’s subsequent output has been characterized by almost nonstop collaboration. To sound like nothing I've ever heard before and still be beautiful in its attempt.Since Bon Iver’s wintry debut, For Emma, Forever Ago, Justin Vernon has been squirming to escape the Justin Vernon Archetype - that he is an antisocial, melodramatic, cabin-dwelling flannel enthusiast.

The album is just alien and that's what I want out of music. The religious themes are very interesting to me, specifically "I didn't need you that night / Not gonna need you anytime / Was gonna take it as it goes / I could go forward in the light / Well I better fold my clothes," it's often memed as a stupid line but I think there's a lot there. It's intimate on songs like Creeks, it's cryptic throughout, and the electronic experimentation can be seen everywhere. A 9/10 album, only because the next one is just a perfect album to me.Ģ2, A Million: Probably my 3rd favorite album of all-time behind Endless and Blonde. For Emma, Forever Ago: Not a single skip. But then it has songs that I really don't care for like We, Holyfields, U (Man Like), Faith.Ģ. It's got some amazing songs, some of my favorite of Bon Iver, like iMi, Jelmore, RaBi. I,I: I can't really listen to this album all the way through. Bon Iver (self-titled): it's good but doesn't capture what makes Bon Iver so special to me (the intimacy, the cryptic lyrics (that it has), and electronic experimentation.ģ. I am also happy that I found this awesome community that loves his music.Ĥ. I have only started really listening to Bon Iver for a couple of months after Justin’s interview on Time Crisis (any TC heads out there) and the band has quickly become one of my favorites. I need to listen to it all the way through. I love the combination of all the different sounds, Hey Ma, U, and IMI are songs that I love, and this is the album that if I start it. I,I: I love this album the mixes hit me every time. Skinny Love though overplayed is still a beautiful song that hits me every time For Emma Forever Ago: this album is great and I love the folk sound with Justin’s beautiful voice.
